Numeric Weather Prediction
Model Output

GeoStream™ COMPASS gives the customer control of their preferred Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) outputs that are displayed in a final consensus forecast. This includes publicly available NWP models (e.g. HRRR, NBM, GFS, NAM), non-public NWP models (e.g. ECMWF), and can include third-party blended model output.

Our software package provides forecasts for customer-specified maintenance patrol road segments and Road Weather Information System (RWIS) stations. Each forecast can be configured to provide hourly values of each of the following weather items, out to 48 hours in advance.

  • Air temperature in degrees Fahrenheit
  • Dew point temperature in degrees Fahrenheit
  • Probability of precipitation during the hour
  • Predominant precipitation type
  • Precipitation rate in inches per hour
  • Running total of expected snowfall or ice accumulation during the forecast period
  • Wind direction and speed reported in half-octant form, i.e., NW, SSE, etc., where an octant is equal to 45 degrees. Proposer will provide wind speeds in miles per hour
  • Wind gust speed
  • Pavement condition
  • Road surface temperature in degrees Fahrenheit
  • Bridge temperature in degrees Fahrenheit
  • Friction/Grip forecast

All forecast values are displayed both graphically (time-series) and in tabular text form. The tabular and graphical hourly forecasts automatically update to the HRRR model every 1-hour unless the customer chooses another model to rely on - GeoStream™ COMPASS will then default to the chosen model run unless the forecaster specifies otherwise. All forecasts are available via the Internet for the client to access at work, at home, or on the go. The site is password protected and can be accessed by at least 500 users simultaneously on Google Chrome.

GeoStream™ COMPASS is an optimized as a desktop application for extensive analysis and operations planning and decisions. GeoStream™ COMPASS also works on smartphones* and tablets and is optimized for ease of navigation and view area on a small screen and fingertip operation.

* Smartphone operations work best in landscape mode due to extensive use of detailed data tables

Daily Summary Extended Forecast

The daily summary is a 7-day extended forecast with daily highs, lows, and precipitation chances in a tabular view. It is ideal for providing operations planners a quick look at the forecast for any point on the map. Additional parameters such as snow depth and water equivalent moisture from any precipitation are also provided

Visualization and data management for additional infomation sources

These data include:

  • Avalanche forecast polygons, metadata and forecast information for applicable avalanche zones
  • Crowd-sourced friction data from passenger vehicles
  • Crowd-sourced road roughness data from passenger vehicles
  • High-resolution radar and precipitation
  • Image analytics providing road conditions
  • National Weather Service weather and civil alerts as interactive polygons
  • Integrated interally created products: Morning Weather Report; Daily Forecast; etc

Seasonal Snowfall over Unlabeled Satellite Map

Historical data and lookback capability.

These data will include:

  • Radar
  • Satellite
  • Road Surface Forecasts
  • RWIS Observation Data
  • Crowd-sourced friction observations
  • Seasonal snowfall accumulations: 1 day; 1 week; 1 month; season to date
  • Customer generated mobile observations: AVL; friction; geo-tab plow information

Executive Briefing
Center

GeoStream™ Executive Briefing Center is an add-on feature to GeoStream™ COMPASS. Executive Briefing Center provides customer control of which Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models will be displayed in the final consensus forecast. The NWP models may be chosen by your own experts who know the region and forecast the best. The output may be used to brief the media and high-level executives.

Tools include:

  • High-resolution radar reflectivity and precipitation type
  • Multi-channel satellite layers (e.g., water vapor, visible, infrared)
  • Crowd-sourced third-party friction data aligned to applicable road segments
  • National Weather Service weather warnings, watches, advisoties and civil alerts polygons
  • Additional customer-specific geospatial data per customer request (e.g., avalanche conditions and forecasts, flood potential)

NIRA Dynamics

Through our partnership with NIRA Dynamics, GeoStream™ COMPASS includes the option of accessing NIRA's groundbreaking innovations in Vehicle Assistance, Driver Support and Road Maintenance

This translates into a powerful tool to detect potential road condition incidents before they would usaully be discovered. With friction and road roughness data available as simple visuals (red, orange, yellow, green), NIRA Dynamics road data are easy to understand and consume at a glance. For deeper inspection, GeoStream™ COMPASS allows for each NIRA Dynamics product to be queried offering the ability to display data on-screen or export to a formatted report.

Nira Dynamics offers real-time connected vehicle data for geospatial monitoring. These data will include:

  • Friction: proven to be the most accurate way of describing vehicle traction
  • Wetness (via windshield wiper activity)
  • Ambient temperature
  • Slippery alerts based on road users

Some of the insights provided include:

  • Performance KPI’s: Road Regain, seasonal performance, state-wide or per district.
  • Slippery prone area identification
  • Thermal mapping
